Abstract. In this paper, a Zero Index Metamaterial (ZIM) is proposed for antenna gain and directivity enhancement. This ZIM is developed, characterized and employed for elliptical UWB operating on the frequency range 3.1Ghz-20GHz. The unique property of the metamaterial gathers the wave radiated from the antenna and collimates it towards the normal direction when used as a superstrate, the effective permittivity and permeability of the (ZIM) are designed to synchronously approach zero. This leads the ZIM to having an effective wave impedance matching with air and near-zero index simultaneously
