Applications of Glycerol as Green Solvent

Harshal D. Kawale, Sneha Acharya, Nanda Kishore

Excessive use of fossil fuels leads to the diminution of petroleum as well as affected the environment very harshly. Accordingly, to meet the energy needs of the world, it is now mandatory to develop sustainable and renewable technologies. One such green technology is the production of biodiesel and bioethanol. During the biodiesel production, a huge amount of byproduct is generated and wasted i.e. “glycerol”. This glycerol has enormous potential for applications in pharmaceutical, food and explosive industries. Henceforth, to study the glycerol as a green solvent and to get knowledge about its applications are future changing prospectives. Here, this book chapter is mainly focusing on the application of glycerol as a green solvent to produce valuable bio-based chemicals and its application in catalysis.
