Abstract. This article presents an experimental determination of the mode I critical strain energy release rate (c-SERR) for different initiation definitions. The multidirectional (MD) and mechanically coupled laminates were subjected to the double cantilever beam (DCB) test. The NL, Pmax and 5% criteria were taken into account in calculation of the fracture toughness (GIC). An acoustic emission (AE) technique was used as additional initiation criterion. On the basis of the performed test it was found that the critical strain energy release rate depends on the adopted definition as well as on the specimen interface and mechanical couplings.
