The manufacture of wafers for semiconductors involves a multitude of processes, and monitoring and maintaining correct temperatures and positioning at all times is crucial. Photon Control is a leader in the semiconductor industry, and many Fortune 500 companies come to us for our positioning and temperature sensor expertise.
Silicon wafer production involves numerous different processes and has to be highly accurate. The positioning needs to be spot on as wafers move through the various processes, and the temperature must be correct. The temperature often also needs to vary hugely within short spaces of time. If the accuracy is off, there can be a lot of wastage which costs manufacturing companies a lot of money.
We supply temperature and positioning sensors that are the technology within the technology, when it comes to wafer manufacturing equipment. Our sensors are accurate and reliable up to very high or low temperatures. They can also resist electromagnetic radiation and help reduce wafer wastage through highly accurate positioning.

MDP Microwave-Detected Photoconductivity:
The advanced method MDP is well suited for both, defect investigation by e.g. injection dependent minority carrier lifetime measurements, as well as mapping of wafers or even ingots for inline metrology. MDP has a variety of advantages in sensitivity, speed and resolution.
MD-PICTS is a modification of MDP, where temperature dependent measurements of the defect part of the transient are accomplished. This allows to do a spatial resolved defect characterization.
Materials Science Applications of J&M equipment include geology and petrography (vitrinite reflectance, maceral analysis), color measurements on foils, LEDs and TFT displays, end point detection with plasma etching on wafers, fluorescences, rapid kinetics of nanoparticles and much more.

Typically our clients are working in research or manufacturing of advanced semiconductor materials for integrated circuits or optoelectronic devices. Recently photovoltaic solar energy conversion and thermoelectric materials have become an important part of our activities.
Our experience and proven solutions include the measurement of majority carrier properties (such as resistivity, carrier concentration, mobility, effective mass, trapping) and minority carrier properties (such as minority carrier lifetime, diffusion length, trapping), in R&D or production environments. We also include associated measurements of insulating (dielectric) and metal thin film properties and film thickness and the interface characteristics between these thin films and the semiconductor.
When we use the term “semiconductor” today we mean it in the broadest sense. It can be the elemental materials silicon germanium etc, in single crystal or polycrystalline wafers or in polycrystalline or amorphous thin film form but it can also mean compound semiconductors or alloys of compounds in crystal wafers or polycrystalline thin films and more recently also polymer and organic thin films.
The methods we apply to these problems cover a wide range of technologies ( such as; optical, electronic, magnetic, cryogenic, acoustic, electro-chemical, vacuum etc) supplied by a number of partner companies around the world.
