Bamboo Reinforced Concrete Beams for Precast Slab

Abstract. The precast slabs are one of the most commonly used elements in Brazilian construction industry. They are made out of pre-fabricated beams which is composed of a steel truss fixed in a rectangular base of concrete, and this way commercialized. These easily produced beams are equally spaced and arranged to make the slabs. Afterwards, the gaps between then will receive fill blocks, which may be made out of Styrofoam, or ceramic. These blocks are permanent forms. Over this system a capping steel mesh is placed and then a concrete layer of 3 to 5 centimeters thick is set. This way the steel apex of the steel truss is merged into the concrete mass leading to the precast slab, a monolithic system easy to manufacture, low weight and high safety level, a plate ribbed by the beams. This paper presents the mechanical tests and the construction techniques that allowed replacing the steel bars by bamboo. The three points bending flexural test were performed in 2 prototypes beams, one of them made of steel and the other made of bamboo. Also characterization tests were run: – concrete compression and bamboo tension. The results were very effective, leading to the possibility of replacement of the steel by bamboo. The replacement of steel bars by bamboo bars on concrete precast slabs means using 2,9 kgf of bamboo instead of 4 kgf of steel in 1 square meter of slab. In 100 m2, 400 kgf of steel could be saved.
