A preliminary study of SHM compared with NDT

K. D. Mohd Aris, A.Hamdan, F. Mustapha

Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems are still new in the aircraft system technology. There are many opportunities to employ the technology on composite structure especially in the aircraft industry. The application of composite in aircrafts can increase the demand and awareness to use the SHM concept for structural integrity purposes. The initial testing shows the advantages of using the SHM system in detecting embedded damages of a Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) panel when compared to existing non-destructive inspection (NDI) methods. The NDI technique itself is labor intensive and very costly. Therefore, the use of SHM is important for augmenting the NDI techniques. Since PZT smart sensors are widely available, cheap and lightweight, they may become a system of choice when implementing a SHM system to monitor the structure’s status in undamaged and repaired conditions.
