Ionic Liquids as Green Electrolytes for Aluminum and Aluminum-Alloy Production

Guocai Tian

The development of new methods for low-temperature, low-energy, and clean electrolysis of aluminum is very important. Ionic liquids, which have unique physical and chemical properties, have been widely used in electrochemistry, cells, and low-temperature electrodeposition of metals (especially for active metals). In the present chapter, we will present the advances and perspectives in the production of aluminum and aluminum alloys in ionic liquid systems. The basic theory of aluminum electrolysis in ionic liquids, electrodeposition of Al and its alloys from chloroaluminate and non-chloroaluminate ionic liquids, aluminum electrodeposition in ionic liquids with Al2O3, additives, and external field process enhancement in ionic liquids and aluminum refining are reviewed and discussed. Further research directions are also presented.
