R&D Applications
SWIR Imaging: SWIR or Short-Wave infrared imaging covers the wavelength range from 700 nm to approximately 2500 nm and is suitable for low light applications.
Spectroscopy & Microscopy: SWIR spectroscopy is a valuable tool to classify products. SWIR microscopy is typically used to inspect micro-electronic circuits on chip or wafer level.
Short integration time imaging: Laser gated imaging with short integration time allows imaging at long ranges through haze, smoke, fog or dust.
Low-light-level imaging: Low-light-level imaging in semiconductor microscopy applications is used for fault localization in microelectronic failure analysis.
High speed imaging: High speed imaging is taking pictures at a high frame rate using a short exposure time. We offer the world’s fastest SWIR InGaAs camera and versatile MWIR cameras.
Homeland security R&D & Image fusion: Homeland security is mainly focused on critical infrastructure protection. Image fusion is a great technique as it combines SWIR and LWIR images, resulting in the best of both worlds.
Thermography & NDT: Thermography is widely used in applications where contact-thermometry cannot be used to measure temperature.

LUZCHEM RESEARCH was incorporated in Canada in 1997. The company was founded by Dr. J.C. Scaiano and his wife Elda E. Scaiano, and entered the manufacturing field with the construction of photoreactors for the Pulp and Paper industry. The company has continued to refine and develop the photoreactor line and in 1999 reached an agreement with the University of Ottawa for the design, development and manufacturing of a patented miniaturized Laser Flash Photolysis System (mLFP).

In 2002, Luzchem introduced products for thin film metrology, in 2003 xenon illumination products, in 2004 spectroradiometers, in 2005 solar simulators and in 2007 its new MSL line, a new concept in modular spectroscopy.

Since 2003, Luzchem has been located at the Canotek Industrial Park in Ottawa, where it has 4000 sq ft of research and manufacturing space. Dr. Scaiano, Luzchem’s chief scientist, is responsible for R&D efforts directed to the development of new spectroscopy products.

Dr. Scaiano also holds the position of Distinguished University Professor at the University of Ottawa and is the Canada Research Chair in Applied Photochemistry. Details of Dr. Scaiano’s career can be found at the Institute for Scientific Information Highly Cited website. Scaiano is also the winner of the 2002 Gerhard Herzberg NSERC gold medal in Science and Engineering, Canada’s top science prize, and an officer of the Order of Canada.

In 2007 Luzchem was honored by the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce by being selected as a finalist in the Small Business of the Year category . Luzchem won the Award in October 2007. This vote of confidence by the Ottawa Business Community provides great impetus for our company’s development.
